The former president of Chile, Sebastian Pineraurged unity, said that the country needs a new Constitution and assured that starting tonight the country “You have a chance at a happier life.”
The conservative politician voted at a school in the Las Condes district, in the upper area of the capital, together with his wife, Cecilia Morel, and some of his grandchildren, at table 111, in a suit and comfortable slippers.
“We have been confrontational and violent for too long. Only with unity will we be able to build everyone’s house” stated before noting that “We have a commitment for a new and good Constitution, and we are going to fulfill that commitment.”
“From tonight it is important that dialogue prevails and we leave the culture of cancellation out. Chile is a wonderful country and we have the opportunity to have a happier life. The best is ahead. A new attitude is required. In In recent times the division has passed all limits”ended after urging the population “to vote with joy”.
More than 15 million Chileans are called this Sunday to the polls to decide, in a mandatory plebiscite, whether to approve or reject a proposal for a new Constitution drawn up over a year by a joint and democratically elected constitutional convention and which would replace the one written in 1980, in dictatorship.
The result, which is expected to be tight and uncertain, will be known around 7:00 p.m. local time (11:00 p.m. GMT).
