MIAMI, United States. — Six months after Hurricane Ian passed through the province of Pinar del Río, 28,482 homes remain homeless, reported this Wednesday the Guerrilla Newspaper.
According to the official media, the figures were released at a press conference by Andrés Martín Carmona, director of Housing in the territory.
The official indicated that of the 47,582 houses that suffered partial collapse of their roofs, just over 19,100 have been recovered.
“The best in full compliance are Mantua at 76 percent, Sandino at 66, Guane at 54. While San Luis is at 23, Pinar del Río at 17 and San Juan y Martínez marches at 14 percent,” he said. Martin Carmona.
The manager assured that it is the municipality of Guane “the one that best uses and optimizes the delivery rates of the roof elements, something that the other municipalities must improve.”
Martín Carmona admitted that despite certain advances “the housing construction situation is not advancing at the desired pace.”
It is estimated that in the province of Pinar del Río at least 90,394 homes suffered considerable damage due to Ian. Many of them continue without being repaired due to lack of resources, said the official.
“We must say that with regard to zinc roof tiles, since the beginning of December this resource has not entered the country, except for 10,000 donated roof tiles that arrived and we distributed quickly (…) The real situation is that today the country does not have the raw material for the preparation of said tiles by the national industry. In the case of asbestos cement, there is no availability in the country either, ”he said.
Martín Carmona added that the province has also had “serious difficulties” in obtaining P-350 cement for cladding, browning, footing castings and others. There are also shortages of metal beams, as well as braces and wooden screeds for finishing homes.
