MIAMI, United States. — A Cuban pilot who escaped from the island this Friday arrived in the United States aboard a Soviet-made AN-2 plane, according to several reports in the media in South Florida.
The news was confirmed in social networks by the journalist Mario J. Pentón, who shared images of the aviator on social networks.
Miami International Airport officials told the network Telemundo that the single-engine Antonov An-2 aircraft landed at Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport around 11:30 a.m.
Likewise, sources to which he had access to the digital portal CyberCuba indicate that the young man is named Rubén Martínez and that he was interrogated by the US authorities.
The same sources, close to the pilot, informed that media outlet of the arrest of Martínez’s mother and sisters, who reside in the city of Santa Clara.
CyberCuba indicates that the plane, license plate 1885, covered the route between the El Cedro airfield in Sancti Spiritus and the Dade-Collier airport (TNT), in Ochopee, Florida, in a journey of around one hour.
The information adds that Martínez, a native of Santa Clara and a pilot for the National Air Services Company (ENSA), made a first flight from the Sancti Spíritus airport to the El Cedro aerodrome. From there he took off again around seven in the morning, heading for South Florida.
So far, the authorities of both countries have not commented on the event.
The AN-2 in which the Cuban pilot escaped is widely used on the island for aerial spraying, transportation of written press in isolated areas, as well as skydiving and air taxi services for tourists.
