Pilar Rahola: “Trump has that duality between perversity and opportunity”

The Catalan analyst was in Lima and spoke loud and clear about the totalitarianisms that threaten us.

As a former deputy, how do you analyze the speech of trump?

when he speaks trumpI do two things: listen to it and then take out all the noise and histrionic excess that the character has. I don’t believe everything he said, not everything interests me, I don’t like everything and not everything scares me. Trump has that interesting duality between perversity and opportunity. I hope that the Trump era brings us the end of the Ukrainian war, the second package of the Abraham Accords and that it gives us a little pause China. It is his second term and he wants to enter history. And no one enters history if they do not resolve an armed conflict.

What are the issues that concern you?

The worrying issues. That he has left the fight against climate change, his denialism on the issue of the pandemic and his contempt for the WHO, and his strange ambiguity on the Latin American issue.

Who leads in Europe? Pedro Sánchez pretends to be an anti-trump.

He is an opportunist, he has no chance. The one who fills the leadership vacuum in Europe is Georgia Meloni. He has made an interesting derivative. He has gone from openly fascist positions to conservative positions. In any case, Europe is in definitions. Sail through seas of confusion. He is nowhere in the world, he lost his ability to influence. And the monsters are growing.

And yet, the last bastion seems to be the European Union. Should it be protected at all costs?

The European Union is where liberal democracies as we understand them were created, but at the same time it is the 20th century of two totalitarian ideologies: fascism and communism. And I believe that we are still the remains of those miseries. Europe must be saved.

Look: Elmer Schialer speaks out on possible deportation of Peruvians from the US: “They will have all the facilities they need”

And what is the position of China on the board?

The great battle front is China. We’ll see how he does trump. When he talks about the Panama Canal, what he is saying is that it must be stopped. When he talks about the border with Mexico, he is thinking about fentanyl, which is a Chinese drug. When he talks about Venezuela, he thinks that he does not fall because of China, because of China and Iran. With Obama, the United States left the world, it stopped being the commissioner. And that space was occupied by China, because in politics the gaps are filled. And China articulated its proxies intelligently. Your BRICS, Russia, Iran… When Trump says: “I’m back,” he means: “USA “He’s back.” The big problem is that China is not a democracy nor does it want to be, and it is maintaining many dictatorships around the world.

What is the geopolitics that is coming in the 21st century?

The great drama of the 21st century is the failure of Kissinger’s phrase. He believed that, when the liberal economy and capitalism entered the countries of old communism, middle classes would be created and that would bring democratic freedoms. That has not happened, neither in China nor in Russia. The great theocracies of the Middle East live connected to the 18th century, but with satellite mobile phones. Hamas has an 18th century ideology, but it kills you with 21st century technology. If anything has become clear in the 21st century, it is that economic freedom does not have to bring democratic freedoms. And that is where the world is getting complicated for us.

Why does the cause of Palestine have such good press among young people?

One of the most serious absurdities of the international left is the whitewashing of terrorism since October 7. The speech of hate against Israel and the speech of trivializing terrorism of Hamas. Hamas has been an organization that for 14 years has oppressed its people, killed opponents, destroyed Gaza and turned it into a large weapons warehouse. It has built 750 km of tunnels. To make a proportion, the New York subway is 400 km. It is double the meter. Hamas has received in Gaza, in proportion to its demographics, probably double what Europe received with the Marshall Plan. They have had resources to make Gaza a paradise. In contrast, Hamas has billionaire leaders.

For the left, everyone is a Nazi, except Hamas.

Except Iran. Where was that same left when Iranian women were fighting for their freedoms? They don’t mess with the Iranian theocracy. Look at Maduro and Evo Morales, little friends of the ayatollahs, the most delusional regime.

Before, Sartre supported Mao.

In the fight between Sartre and Camus, Sartre defended Pol Pot. Camus told him that “that is not freedom.” We come from that left that has whitewashed dictators. At my university, for reading the Gulag Archipelago, they told me that I read CIA books because there were no prisoners in Siberia. If the two great totalitarianisms of the 20th century were communism and Nazism, the great totalitarianism of the 21st century is jihadism. Hamas is an ideology of death. Democracy is weaker than dictatorship. The main enemy of liberal democracy is the Harvard campus. It is very lenient with great dictatorships.

PLEASE NOTE

“Starting with Wokism, the Democratic Party is shipwrecking everywhere, it cannot find its place. It is an ideology of confrontation.”

“October 7 (the Hamas attack on Israel) killed feminism. I never imagined that the most brutal gender violence, the most savage rapes, would go viral. It has been terrible. They have made it viral and applauded it. Where is Me Too? The silence of feminism is complicit with the rapists.”

“Today the UN is a whitewasher of dictatorships. It’s a joke, a joke.”
