Pico and license plate on Saturdays: How to register your car in Bogotá and forget about the restriction?

Pico and license plate on Saturdays: How to register your car in Bogotá and forget about the restriction?

The Ministry of Mobility reveals the seven key steps to legally avoid the pick and plate. What should you do? We tell you.

Bogotá is preparing for an important change in mobility: Starting in 2026, vehicles that are not registered in the city will have a license plate and license plate even on Saturdays.

A measure that seeks to organize traffic and reduce congestion, but that could complicate life for those who circulate through the capital with cars from other cities. However, there is a clear and legal solution to circumvent these restrictions: transfer your vehicle’s registration number to Bogotá.

The District Mobility Secretariat (SDM) confirmed this and explained that this benefit will apply to all owners who register their vehicle in the city and comply with their obligations as Current SOAT, up-to-date technical-mechanical review and taxes paid.

In addition to avoiding the pick and license plate on Saturdays, vehicles registered in Bogotá will be able to access special discounts for the ‘Pico y Placa Solidario’ and other benefits that depend on the type of vehicle.

The idea is to encourage more Bogota residents to register their cars in the city and, at the same time, promote more orderly and safe circulation.

Step by step to transfer your registration to Bogotá

If you want to get rid of the restrictions and take advantage of the benefits, the SDM details seven key steps for transfer:

  1. Request the transfer at your current transit agency. This first step is crucial, since your car must start the process from the place where it is currently registered.
  2. Wait for the vehicle folder to arrive in Bogotáa process that can take up to 60 business days. The car information must be officially sent so that the VUS can process the filing.
  3. Schedule an appointment at the Single Window for Services (VUS) to deliver the required documentation.
  4. Present the necessary documents, which include citizenship card, Updated RUNT, current SOAT, up-to-date technical-mechanical inspection, peace of mind for fines and the filing form filled out.
  5. Pay the processing feewhich for 2025 is established at $400,200 COP.
  6. In-person filing, where an analyst will review all the documents and, if necessary, take your fingerprint to validate the identity in the RUNT.
  7. Reception of the new traffic license and plates, that will allow you to circulate through Bogotá without license plate restrictions, even on Saturdays.

The SDM emphasizes that this procedure must be done directly in the VUSwithout intermediaries, and remember that there are 19 locations available in the city to complete the filing.

Thanks to this measure, drivers will be able to continue enjoying their weekend without worrying about the license plate, while complying with the law and obtaining additional discounts.
