Pharmaceutical industry reports three years of consecutive growth

The pharmaceutical market closed 2022 with a growth of 21.9% compared to 2021, according to data provided by the Chamber of the Pharmaceutical Industry (Cifar) this Saturday, February 19, EFE.

The industrial union pointed out that last year 194.24 million medicines were placed on the market, which is 34.96 million units more than in 2021, when 159.28 million medicines were distributed in pharmacies.

Half of the medicines distributed in the country are produced locally and the other half are imported, according to Cifar.

This is the third consecutive year in which the pharmaceutical market reports growth. In 2020, an increase of 19% was reported compared to 2019 and also 19% in 2021. Between 2014 and 2019, the market fell by 75%, according to Cifar statistics.

The president of the chamber, Titus Lopezsaid that “new players have entered the national market”, which import products that are not manufactured in the country, which has improved supply levels compared to five years ago, when – he indicated – the shortage of medicines reached 80% .

On the other hand, he assured that the “low” purchasing power of the Venezuelan, who “buys what is necessary,” still represents a problem for the industry. “What sells the most are analgesics, anti-inflammatories, those products that are low-priced,” he said.

In addition, he explained that the industry “expanded its production lines due to the effects of covid-19, so there are many more units now.”

According to the Confederation of Industrialists of Venezuela (Conindustria), the pharmaceutical sector operated at 41% of its installed capacity during the third quarter of 2022, which represented a growth of 16 points compared to its operation in the same period of 2021, when it used 25% of its capacity.
