The Federal Police (PF) launched, this Wednesday (3), an operation to dismantle a group specialized in offering illegal services through distributed denial of service attacks (DDoS – Distributed Denial of Service) on demand, known as booters and stressors.
You DDoS are malicious attempts to disrupt the normal traffic of a server, service or network by overwhelming it with a flood of internet traffic from multiple sources.
The goal is to make the target inaccessible to legitimate users by flooding it with data until it becomes unavailable. This can disrupt operations, cause financial losses, steal business, or damage a company’s reputation.
As part of Operation Power OFFcomthe PF executed search and seizure warrants and two temporary arrest warrants, to be served in the cities of São Paulo, São Caetano do Sul, Rio de Janeiro and Tubarão, in Santa Catarina.
Illegal platforms
The targets are administrators of illegal platforms and users who hired the services to carry out attacks against highly relevant systems.
According to the PF, the investigations – supported by the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) – showed that these platforms allow anyone, even without technical knowledge, to carry out attacks DDoS upon payment. The services are hosted on cloud servers distributed in several countries and used by agents on a global scale.
“Among the attacks attributed to users of these platforms are offensives against strategic Brazilian bodies, such as the Federal Police (2020), Serpro, Dataprev and the Integrated Telematics Center of the Brazilian Army (2018)”, informed the Federal Police.
