The Federal Police began, this Friday (10), to implement actions to eradicate mining in Yanomami lands, in order to interrupt the logistics of the crime, “with a focus on making the infrastructure used for the practice of illegal mining, as well as as the materialization of evidence about criminal activity”. The actions take place within the scope of Operation Liberation.
“The main focus, at this moment, is to stop the criminal practice and provide for the total and effective removal of non-indigenous people from the Yanomami Land, preserving the human rights of all those involved,” informed the PF – which has the help of the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), the National Indian Foundation (Funai), the National Force and the Ministry of Defense.
In a note, the head of the PF’s Environmental and Amazon Directorate, Humberto Freire, informed that the actions focus on the logistics of the crime and the recording of the criminal materiality, and not on the people involved, “in order to avoid difficulties in exiting of the non-Indians of the Yanomami Land”.
According to him, care must be taken to avoid problems due to the fact that some garimpeiros are unable to leave the area. The director’s concern is to prevent them from ending up without a minimum means of subsistence. “We cannot forget that the main focus of the operation is the total removal of non-indigenous people from the Yanomami TI”, he explained.
According to the PF, Operation Liberation will be maintained until legality is restored in Yanomami land.
