Petro’s 10 proposals to combat the climate crisis

Petro's 10 proposals to combat the climate crisis

This Monday, November 7, the president of Colombia, Gustav Petro, gave a speech at the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2022, better known as COP 27, in the resort of Sharm El-Sheik, in Egypt.

(See: President Gustavo Petro’s speech at COP 27, in Egypt).

During his speech, the national president was, once again, mvery critical of oil and coal, and said that hehe COP summits are no longer providing answers to the environmental crisis that the world lives

Thus, Petro presented his 10 proposals to combat climate change and win the battle.

(See: President Petro sanctioned the Escazú Agreement law).

1. Humanity must know that if world politics does not overcome the climate crisis, it will become extinct. The times of extinction that we live in must push us to act now and globally as human beings with or without government permission. It is time for the mobilization of total humanity.

2. The market is not the main mechanism to overcome the climate crisis. It is the market and the accumulation of capital that produced it and they will never be its remedy.

3. It is only public and global planning, multilateral, which allows us to move to a global decarbonized economy. The UN must be the scene of such planning.

4. It is world politics, that is, the mobilization of humanity, which will correct the course and not the agreement of technocrats influenced, many, by the interests of the coal, oil and gas companies.

(See: Economy, the crucial challenge of the new ‘pink tide’ in Latin America).

5. We must save the pillars of the planet’s climate, first of all. The Amazon rainforest is one of four existing. Colombia will grant 200 million dollars annually for 20 years to save the Amazon rainforest. We look forward to global input.

6. The climate crisis can only be overcome if we stop consuming hydrocarbons. It is time to devalue the hydrocarbon economy with defined dates for its end and to value the branches of the decarbonized economy. The solution is a world without oil and without coal.

7. The constitutive treaties of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) go against the solution of the climate crisis and therefore they must be subordinated and reformed to the agreements of the COP and not the other way around. As long as we maintain the current WTO treaty we will not move forward, we will go backwards in solving the climate crisis and we will get closer and closer to the end.

8. The IMF must start the debt swap program for investment in climate change adaptation and mitigation in all the developing countries of the world. The economic blockade policies today do not favor democracy and go against the times of humanity to act against the crisis.

(See: Petro Government will file the National Development Plan in February).

9. The world’s private and multilateral banks must stop financing hydrocarbon economics.

10. Immediately, peace negotiations must begin. War takes away time, vital for humanity to avoid its extinction.
