After 12 days of searching Petrópolis, a city in the mountainous region of the state of Rio de Janeiro hit by a storm on the 15th, the death toll in the tragedy reaches 229, with 20 people still missing. The shelters, set up by the city government in 13 schools in the city, have 875 people.
The identification of the dead is carried out by the technical and scientific team of the Civil Police. So far, the bodies of 132 women and 91 men have been found, 43 of which are minors.
Experts also perform DNA analysis (Deoxyribonucleic Acid – molecule present in the nucleus of cells of living beings that carries the genetic information of an organism) of remains recovered from the affected areas.
Red Cross teams assisted 240 people, with psychosocial support and delivery of donations such as clothing, food, snacks for children and toys.
Civil defense
According to the latest balance, released by the city hall last night (26), there were 3,201 occurrences related to heavy rains, 2,468 of which were landslides. Today, work continues to clean and clear roads, organize traffic, logistics of donations and the search for victims by the Fire Department.
Yesterday, the Civil Defense detonated a stone in Morro da Oficina, in Alto da Serra, the place most affected by the tragedy, to free up the area and continue the search. The region was isolated and the work did not use explosives, but a chemical reaction technique.
Also yesterday, the Civil Defense carried out more than 1,432 analyzes of land and buildings, with the support of agents from Niterói, São João de Meriti, the Department of Mineral Resources (DRM), the Brazilian Geological Service (CPRM) and volunteer engineers and geologists.
The Águas do Imperador concessionaire reported that it has already regularized the service in 96.3% of the city’s areas, in addition to providing water trucks for cleaning the city’s streets.
Transparency
The city hall of Petrópolis launched a panel online to give transparency to the expenses with the recovery of the city after the rains. On the pagethe population will be able to follow the federal and state transfers to the municipality, in addition to the account statement made available by the municipal government for donations to the victims of the rains.
Until Friday (25), the city had received four transfers from the Union, through the Ministry of Regional Development. There were R$ 644,206.95 for vehicle rental for the Civil Defense; R$ 1,676,000.00 for basic food baskets, hygiene kits, mattresses, dormitory kits and cleaning kits for the affected families; R$ 1,038,475.04 for the recovery of public roads, vehicle bridges, pedestrian bridges, guardrails and river banks; and R$ 655,731.20 for machinery and personnel to clean and clear streets and rivers.
The city hall also received R$ 30 million from the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio (Alerj) and opened an account to receive cash donations for the victims of the rains, PMP Petrópolis – SOS 2022. Until Friday (25), deposited in the account R$ 222,784.82. Donations can be made by PIX, transfer or deposit: Banco do Brasil, branch 0080-9, account 96011-X, CNPJ 29.138.344/0001-43 (PIX key).
The report checked the transparency page and, so far, there are no receipts or invoices referring to the expenses of the amounts received.
