Petrobras discovered an oil reservoir in the Campos Basin, off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. The company’s first assessments indicate that the oil found is of “excellent quality”.
The announcement of the discovery was made this Monday (17), through a statement to investors.
Exploratory well 4-BRSA-1403D-RJS is located in a post-salt area in the Sudoeste de Tartaruga Verde block, located 108 kilometers from the coast in the city of Campos dos Goitacazes, in a water depth of 734 meters.
“The drilling of this well has already been completed, and the oil-bearing interval was verified through electrical profiles, gas signs and fluid sampling”, explains the oil company in the statement.
The company adds that samples of the material will be sent for laboratory analysis, which will allow the conditions of the reservoirs and fluids found to be characterized, enabling the continued assessment of the area’s potential.
The Sudoeste de Tartaruga Verde block was acquired in September 2018, in the 5th Production Sharing Round, with the state-owned Pré-Sal Petróleo SA (PPSA) as manager. Petrobras is the operator of the block with 100% interest.
Post-salt x pre-salt
Unlike the pre-salt, origin of around 80% of all oil produced in the country, Post-salt reservoirs receive this name because the oil found is found under the seabed, before the salt layer, that is, at shallower depths compared to the pre-salt.
Campos Basin
As PPSA explains, the Campos Basin was the first discovery, with great exploration potential and the challenge of reaching deep waters. The formation took place 100 million years ago, following the process of separation of the South American and African continents, becoming a type of “natural landfill” formed by sediments released into the Atlantic Ocean over that time.
The area covers around 100 thousand square kilometers, extending from Espírito Santo, near Vitória, to Arraial do Cabo, on the north coast of Rio de Janeiro.
