Rodolfo Hernández passed away this Monday at the age of 79 at the International Hospital of Colombia (HIC) in Piedecuesta (Santander). The former presidential candidate spent almost two months in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) fighting for his life after undergoing liver surgery.

Since 2023, the engineer sand had undergone multidisciplinary treatment to combat cancer, which was confirmed as a terminal earlier this year.
Following the news of his death, various public figures expressed their condolences. Among them was President Gustavo Petro, who sent his condolences to Hernández’s family through his X account.
“I regret the death of Rodolfo Hernández after a long battle against cancer, a hug to his family,” the president indicated.

The mayor of Medellín and also former presidential candidate, Federico Gutiérrez, also shared a message: “My solidarity with the family of former presidential candidate Rodolfo Hernández. May he rest in peace.”

For her part, Marelen Castillo, who ran for vice president along with Hernández in 2022, regretted the death of the engineer and sent a message of solidarity to his family.
“I am very sorry to hear about the death of engineer Rodolfo Hernández. At this time, my prayers and condolences go out to his family. May he rest in peace. In the short time I shared with engineer Rodolfo, I felt appreciation for him. Unfortunately, there was a fracture in the relationship, but that does not mean that I do not feel sadness.”wrote Castillo.

Former President Álvaro Uribe also joined the political figures who reacted to the death of the man who also served as mayor of Bucaramanga.
“Our condolences to his entire family and friends. We supported him for mayor of Bucaramanga, we never bothered him, we asked him for nothing as he acknowledged. The advice of his advisors led him to make statements against me during the presidential campaign. That did not leave a mark on me in life, much less in death. My respect.”Uribe said.
