Colombian President Gustavo Petro suspended, this Tuesday, January 10, its last activity in Chile and urgently returned to Colombia to face the emergency unleashed by a large landslide in the department of Cauca.

“Petro was going to accompany us in this activity, but unfortunately, he had to travel to Colombia as a result of a landslide that has affected more than 150 families in the south of his country.“, explained the Chilean president, Gabriel Boric, during the presentation of the route of the future train that will connect the Chilean capital, Santiago, with the coastal city of Valparaíso.
The Colombian president thus concluded his first official visit to Chile, which began on Monday with a bilateral meeting with Boric and the signing of various agreements on the environment, energy and culture.
“I send comrade Petro a big hug from Chile. We had a very good conversation yesterday and I have no doubt that, just as we are advancing in the integration of our country with the trains, we are also going to advance in Latin American integrationBoric added.

Both leaders appeared on Monday at the La Moneda presidential palace (the seat of the Chilean government) after their bilateral meeting and took advantage of the occasion to forcefully condemn the attempted coup in Brazil perpetrated by hordes of Bolsonaristas and ask for regional unity to strengthen democracies.

“The democratic pact in the Americas is in dangerPetro said at the hearing.
“There can be no nuances. These actions are unacceptable, the complicit silences are also (…) Our region must have a clear position on the matter“, indicated, for his part, the Chilean leader.
It is the third meeting between Boric and Petro since both assumed the leadership of their different countries in March and August, respectively, which shows their closeness and willingness to work together.

After the bilateral meeting, Petro held a meeting with the mayoress of Santiago, the communist Iraci Hasler, who gave him the keys to the city and made him an honorary citizen.
He was also received by the presidents of the Senate, Álvaro Elizalde Soto, and of the Chamber of Deputies, Vlado Mirosevic, and this Tuesday, before returning to Bogotá, he visited the Chilean Supreme Court.
