Gustavo Petro assured that the destinies of Colombia and Venezuela “go hand in hand” and along the same path. “It is indispensable” for the region, he added.
The candidate for the presidency of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, affirmed on the night of Thursday, May 5, that if he wins the elections, he will restore diplomatic relations with Venezuela. In his opinion, it was a “mistake” on the part of the Iván Duque government not to have communication with our country.
from Cucuta, Petro He indicated that this city cannot prosper if there is no communication with Venezuela. In addition, he stressed that “the destinations of Colombia and the other side are following the same paths. They look alike even in their rulers. There is nothing more similar to Maduro in Colombia than Duque.”
“I have to tell you that Cúcuta cannot be a city, it cannot prosper, it cannot overcome problems without opening the borders (…) That diplomatic relations be restored normally is a difficult issue, even controversial (…) Debatable on a global scale, Undoubtedly, but I do not see an alternative for Cúcuta if there is no full reestablishment of diplomatic and consular relations between the two countries,” he asserted at a rally protected by people carrying bulletproof shields.

He affirmed that it is not to criticize the other side of the border, but what are the solutions that can be proposed by Colombia to improve the quality of life and avoid the “degradation of society.”
He believes that in order for there to be a commercial relationship, taking advantage of a positive event such as de facto dollarization, he could remedy the lack of dollars in Colombia. That, of course, goes through the normal reestablishment of diplomatic relations.
For Petro, it is essential and the most appropriate path for the region. He criticized that his closest opponent, Federico Gutiérrez, has said that the borders should be opened without reestablishing relations; a fact that for the politician is a “deception”.
“The other state is needed. The will of the two governments is needed. The two governments need to allow the free flow of people,” he said.
Gustavo Petro asserted that whatever the government in both territories is, it is important to maintain the unity, trade and prosperity of the peoples. Similarly, he proposed that Cúcuta be an industrial city and activate the Catatumbo region, for which he thinks of the possibility of going out to sea through Lake Maracaibo.
Diplomatic relations between Colombia and Venezuela have been broken since February 23, 2019; date on which President Duque supported Juan Guaidó for the entry of humanitarian aid to our country, which caused the total rupture between both nations.
