The Colombian president, Gustavo Petro assured this Thursday that his Government will not sign new oil exploration and exploitation contracts because that “brings death.” This was expressed during his speech at the XXII Ibero-American Conference of Ministers of Labor closed this Thursday in Bogotá.

Regarding what Petro expressed, the academic and former Minister of Commerce and Finance José Manuel Restrepo said that “For a country like Colombia, not signing new gas and oil exploration contracts means economic suicide.”

In a post on his X account, Restrepo said that Petro’s decision puts at risk 5.6% of GDP, 20% of tax revenues, 35% of foreign direct investment, 40% of Colombian exports and 80% of royalties from which the social and productive investment of the country’s departments lives.

This puts at risk the “economic and fiscal sustainability of the nation and its departments,” added the former minister, who recalled that Colombia only generates 0.6% of the world’s greenhouse gases.
