In the recent presidential race, Murillo was the vice-presidential formula of Sergio Fajardo, although at first he aspired to be a presidential candidate in property.
During his political career, he was environment minister (2016-2018) in the government of Juan Manuel Santos and also Governor of Chocó (1998-1999 and 2012).

In 2020, he joined the team of the Environmental Solutions Initiative and the Martin Luther King program, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
He replaces Juan Carlos Pinzón in the position, who will be until August 6. Pinzón resigned on June 19.
