Petro government rejects Isabel Zuleta's reform to revive presidential reelection

After learning about the The intention of the senator of the Historic Pact, Isabel Zuleta, to revive the presidential reelection in Colombiawhich has been blocked since the second government of former President Juan Manuel Santos, the Petro government stated its position on the matter.

(Further: Laura Sarabia denounces ‘dishonest and fraudulent actions’ using her name).

The Government has said in all languages that the way the Constitution is today is how democratic alternation works in the country, re-election is prohibited in Colombia and will continue to be prohibited.“, explained the Minister of the Interior, Juan Fernando Cristo.

He also emphasized that Zuleta’s reform “It is not a project of the Historic Pact, but of a senator of the Historic Pact“. With these statements, Cristo made it clear that the Petro administration will not support the reform.

(Read: Review of two years of the Gustavo Petro government).

Zuleta’s initiative not only lacks the support of the Government, but also of his colleagues in the Historic Pact. Despite having been working on the proposal for several months and claiming to have the wording and a solid argumentative basis ready, the senator is alone in her intention.

For his part, the President of Congress, Efraín Cepeda, also expressed his rejection of the proposal, pointing out that there is no favorable environment in Congress to consider presidential reelection.

(See: This is how the Government’s objectives are progressing on the connectivity front).

I don’t see any atmosphere in the Congress of the Republic. I have always said that Congress is the way to settle these differences. I don’t see any atmosphere for a presidential re-election and, what’s more, the Conservative Party introduced a paragraph to the effect that it is not only a legislative act, but a referendum because it is an absolutely guaranteeing issue to ask the Colombian people.“, Cepeda explained.

@ISAZULETA

In this context, it is up to Senator Zuleta to decide whether she plans to continue with the filing of her constitutional reform project, despite the lack of support from both the Government and her own party.

(Further: This would be the assets of the current Minister of Finance, Ricardo Bonilla).

We already have it articulated. We have the entire argumentative basis. What we are missing is the compilation of the concepts.“, Zuleta said.
