Petro considers that military operation against Venezuela would be an aggression to Latin America

El escandalo y la amenaza como formas de gobierno en Colombia/ Gustavo Petro

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, said that Nicolás Maduro has supported the fight against drug trafficking at the border

The Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, warned this Sunday, August 10 that a military operation against Venezuela without the approval of “sister countries” will be an aggression against Latin America and the Caribbean.

«I publicly transmit my given order, as commander of the Colombian Armed Forces. Colombia and Venezuela are the same town, the same flag, the same story. Any military operation that does not have the approval of the sister countries is an aggression against Latin America and the Caribbean », Petro pointed out in his X account.

Petro also republished a message from the Bolivarian Army of Venezuela against the United States and the Attorney General of that country, Pam Bondi, who announced last Thursday a reward of 50 million dollars for information that leads to the arrest of Nicolás Maduro.

Today’s pronouncement adds to the one that Petro made on Saturday, in which he assured that Maduro has supported the fight against drug trafficking at the border.

“In relation to Venezuela, I have received support from Maduro and the General (Vladimir) Padrino, Minister of Defense, to defeat the border drug traffickers with that country,” Petro wrote on social networks.

Colombia and Venezuela share a porous border of 2,219 kilometers in which there is presence of the dissidents of the FARC, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and other armed groups that control the links of drug trafficking and the passage of undocumented people, among other crimes.

Petro added that he does not believe that the “solution of the political problems of Venezuelans goes through money to kill or capture political leaders”, alluding to the new reward that the United States offered for Maduro.

The United States accused Maduro in 2020, during the first presidency of Donald Trump, for crimes of drug trafficking and terrorism, and in January 2025, the current administration increased the reward for its capture to 25 million dollars.

Petro’s position was criticized by the president of the Colombo American Chamber (Amcham Colombia), María Claudia Lacouture, who considered that the brotherhood between countries with “complicity with a dictatorship” should not be confused.

«Brotherhood of peoples or complicity with a dictatorship? To say that any operation in Venezuela is aggression to Colombia is not diplomacy: it is overtry to the country and its forces to defend a dictator and a criminal. Defending the Brothers Peoples is not shielding dictators, ”said Lacouture.
