Petro insists on territorial controversy
Since Wednesday, Petro stated again that Peru would have violated the Treaty of Rio de Janeiro from 1933 to “annex” an island – current district of Santa Rosa – that, according to him, was formed after a change in the channel of the Amazon River and, therefore, it would belong to Colombia. He also announced that it would resort to international law if there is no bilateral dialogue.
The Peruvian Foreign Ministry has rejected these statements and has reaffirmed that the limits with Colombia are fully defined by current international instruments.
