The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, arrived this Wednesday in the city of Jacmel (Haiti) for a visit of just a few hours aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation.

Hundreds of people had gathered hours before around the airport to receive Petro, who finally arrived at 3:50 pm local time at Jacmel airport. in the second visit by a head of state to Haiti since the escalation of violence only after William Ruttopresident of Kenya, the country that leads the Multinational Security Support Mission.

Petro was received by Leslie Voltaire, head of the Presidential Transition Council (CPT)and his predecessor in office until last October, Edgard Leblanc Fils.

There they heard the national anthems of Colombia and Haiti, in the first stages of a visit that, according to the Haitian Presidency, represents “a historic moment for both countries”.

Immediately afterwards, Petro left the airport in the direction of the Jacmel Mayor’s Office and, on his way to the City Hall, thousands of people greeted him through the streets of a city completely mobilized by the arrival of the Colombian president and decked out with Colombian flags and large banners. .

Thousands of people are also waiting in the city’s public square, waiting to see or hear the Colombian president.

Prior to his arrival in Jacmel, according to the Presidency of the Dominican Republic, the plane in which Petro was traveling landed in Santo Domingo, at the Las Américas International Airport, where he was received by the Dominican Vice President, Raquel Peña, and both spoke about the importance of continuing to strengthen the ties of brotherhood that unite both nations.

Within the agenda of this visit, Petro will meet with Voltaire in Jacmel, where a binational Council of Ministers will also take place and a tour of several historical places will take place, including Simón Bolívar Square, who in the 19th century visited this city in search of help for the wars of independence in South America.

The signing of a bilateral cooperation protocol that will cover trade, education, security and humanitarian aid is also expected, before, at the end of the day and the planned agenda, Petro and the delegation accompanying him embark on their return trip. to Colombia.

Petro’s visit takes place two days after the Port-au-Prince Court of Cassation postponed the hearing following 17 Colombians accused of the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise in July 2021.

Furthermore, it comes after a Colombia-Haiti Binational Council of Ministers was held last December in the Colombian city of Riohacha, in the north of the country, which Voltaire attended, with the aim of strengthening bilateral cooperation in areas such as peace, security, justice, migration, economy, education and culture.
