Petro appoints Álvaro Leyva as Minister of Foreign Affairs

President-elect Gustavo Petro announced this Saturday on his Twitter account that he appointed the experienced conservative politician Alvaro Leyva Duran as Minister of Foreign Affairs for the next presidential term.

Álvaro Leyva Durán will be our foreign minister. He will be a chancery of peace. Colombia will contribute all its efforts to the world to overcome the climate crisis and we expect all the effort from the world to overcome our endemic violence”, wrote the leader of the Historical Pact on his Twitter account.

This is the first appointment of his future ministerial cabinet that he has made public Gustav Petro.

Leyva, 79, has extensive experience in Colombian politics, highlighting his role as Minister of Mines and Energy in the government of former President Belisario Betancourt and for his role as a peace negotiator between the Colombian State and groups outside the law.

Currently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is headed by Marta Lucía Ramírez, Vice President and Chancellor; Francisco Javier Echeverri, as Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and María Carmelina Londoño, as Vice Minister of Public Affairs.
