The Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, said on Wednesday that the official coalition in the Senate will change as a result of the election as the new magistrate of the Constitutional Court of the former defense of the people Carlos Camargo, who won the vote on the jurist María Patricia Balanta, preferred of the Government.
(Read: Congress chose Carlos Camargo as the new Court magistrate).
“The government coalition in the Senate is completely remaked. Its objective changes”Petro said, without giving details, in his X account from Japan, where he arrived hours before on an official visit.
The opposition promoted Camargo’s candidacy on the argument that a balanta triumph would give Petro a majority in the Constitutional Court and could incline the balance in case the government promotes a reform of the Constitution to relive the presidential re -election.
In the vote on Wednesday, Camargo – who was defender of the town between 2020 and 2024 – obtained 62 votes, while Balanta, who arrived with the Government wink, received 41 supports, a result much lower than expected by the historical pact, government party, and its allies.
That defeat could lead to the departure of the Minister of Labor, Antonio Sanguinoconsidered quota of the Green Alliance Party.

In another message in his X account, Petro considered a setback for the country that Balanta had not been chosen by the Senate as a new magistrate of the Constitutional Court for being “woman” and “black.”
“They excluded the woman and the black one, under the infundium that she was mine and would take the Constitutional Court,” The president said, who also said he only met Balanta “three days ago.”

For his part, Interior Minister Armando Benedetti said The congressmen rejected the best resume. In addition, he accused the media, cuts and networks of stigmatizing balanta.
“Today Carlos Camargo was chosen as the new magistrate of the Constitutional Court; this stirred a political loving assured.

Benedetti added that what happened in the Senate was an act of discrimination: “He suffered for being a woman, black and coming from a low stratum. If she had been white, with blue eyes, she would have been a magistrate. They were invented that she was Petro’s candidate when he has not seen her twice in her life”.
Petro traveled Tuesday night to Tokyo for an official visit to Japan that will be focused on strengthening the trade and investments of that country, as well as visiting the Osaka Expo.
