Petro affirms that institutional relations will be resumed first and rules out a meeting with Maduro

Gustavo Petro assured that, for the moment, he does not plan to meet with Nicolás Maduro and confirmed that there have already been approaches to reestablish relations with Venezuela.

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro stated that Before restarting military relations with Venezuela, institutional and commercial relations will be restored. His statement came in response to a report by the Minister of Defense, General Vladimir Padrino López, on the resumption of bilateral agreements on military matters.

He also stressed that for now does not plan to meet with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in the coming days and confirmed that there have been rapprochements with the Maduro administration. Several media in that country had reported on the possible meeting between the two leaders in Colombia.

«First, institutional, commercial, social, cultural, and even family relations must be restored. They are commissions that already existed, an institutional framework already existed for decades and now we have to rebuild it », he said when asked about the statements made by the Venezuelan Defense Minister.

This Tuesday, August 9, the head of the country’s military portfolio assured that he had received orders from Maduro to start talks with his Colombian counterpart Iván Velásquez Gómez.

“I have received instructions from Commander in Chief Nicolás Maduro to immediately establish contact with the Colombian Ministry of Defense to reestablish our military relations,” said General Padrino López.

On the other hand, Petro pointed out that since before he took office, Several meetings were held with representatives of the Venezuelan Executive to reactivate diplomatic relations, which have been on standby since 2019. He argued that the agreements for this reactivation will take approximately two months.

“Obviously, since before the inauguration, they are working on the normalization of relations (between the two countries) that implies the opening of the border, but that has nothing to do with any meeting«, the Colombian president told the media in his country.

He also said that so far has not designated any diplomatic official in Venezuela and that he will not announce it until relations between the two nations are normalized. “The chancellor has spoken to look at relations,” he pointed out.

On the subject of the Venezuelan company in that country, Monomers, said that it is a matter of concern because it is a complicated situation to resolve. “It is an important issue that must be seen how it can be restarted and the legal forms and the sanctions issue that is in force, that is not so easy.”
