The penitentiary parliamentary commissioner, Juan Miguel Petit, presented a complaint to the prosecutor to investigate the cause of death of an inmate on the women’s prisonaccording to a document accessed The Observer. The incident occurred on Friday in Unit 5 and led to a mass protest.
The victim, according to the complaint, requested medical care on Wednesday night, and accessed it at the State Health Services Administration (ASSE) medical center located in the building. She returned to her quarters where she ate dinner and went to bed.
According to the testimonies collected by the Office of the Parliamentary Commissioner, this situation continued until Friday at noon. A colleague tried to wake her up but she discovered that she had died, the letter indicates.
official information
The woman was assisted by ASSE doctors, who confirmed her death, according to official information. She was 31 years old and was housed on the third floor, in the preventive detention sector for repeat offenders.
Prison sources told The Observer that in the primary review no signs of violence were found.
women’s prison houses 634 inmates who demand better health care, when its capacity is 390 places, states the complaint. “The numbers are clear: the unit is totally overwhelmed, which prevents proper assistance and healthy coexistence. Added to this is the fact that the building is in terrible material condition, requiring total recycling in order to function properly,” he adds.
The office indicates in the letter that, based on the inmates’ proposals, they agree that “faster and more complete attention, psychological assistance, guidance and assistance for additional cases, greater attention and monitoring of mental health, dental treatment, better coordination with external services since there is a delay in carrying out tests or necessary interventions in hospitals”.
These aspects have to be “studied very seriously”he adds.
