Through an official statement, the Ministry of Foreign Relations denounced that the president of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorrefuses to hand over to Peru the pro tempore presidency of the Pacific Alliance “because it has decided to support the coup d’état” perpetrated by Pedro Castillo on December 7, 2022 and, along these lines, accused him of “politicizing” this ” regional integration process” with the sole purpose of weakening it.
“López Obrador questions the constitutional process that led to the inauguration of the President of the Republic, Mrs. Dina Boluarte. With this, it departs from the principles contained in the Framework Agreement referring to democracy and the rule of law and has politicized the Pacific Alliance, with the sole purpose of weakening it”, the document specifies.
It also points out that the transfer of the pro tempore presidency of the Pacific Alliance to Peru is not a concession, but an obligation contained in a treaty that binds the four countries that make up the Pacific Alliance: Colombia, Chile, Mexico and Peru.

“Despite the fact that the Mexican government has continued to exercise the de facto PPT, the work of the mechanism is paralyzed, as a result of the politicization that it is undergoing for the first time in its history. This situation has impeded progress in the negotiations for the entry of new members from the region to the Pacific Alliance, he adds.
In the statement, the Peruvian Foreign Ministry reiterates the Peruvian government’s rejection “of the acts of interference by the President of Mexico in his internal political process, and his full commitment to democracy and human rights,” and stresses that it is up to the Peruvians find the solution to our problems “without external interference or interference”.
“The Government of Peru reaffirms that the transfer of the PPT of the Pacific Alliance must take place in compliance with the obligations of International Law contained in the Framework Agreement,” he stated.
On the eve, it is recalled, the Mexican president publicly refused to hand over the pro tempore presidency of the Pacific Alliance to Peru, alleging that President Dina Boluarte’s is a “spurious government.”
