A new long holiday will arrive before the end of December and will allow thousands of workers to plan trips, family reunions or rest after a year full of activities. Although many already took advantage of December 8 and 9, a second extended weekend that will unite key dates on the national calendar.
Long Christmas holiday: What are the dates?
December always concentrates movement due to the Christmas holidays, but this year the rest will be greater for those who work in the public sector. This is due to the union of a national holiday and a non-working day declared by the Government through the Supreme Decree No. 042-2025-PCM.
The new long holiday will be shaped like this:
- Thursday December 25: national holiday for Christmas.
- Friday December 26: non-working day for the public sector.
- Saturday December 27: usual rest.
- Sunday December 28: usual rest.
In total there will be four consecutive days to take advantage of the end of the year.
Who will be able to benefit from this measure?
To know if you will be able to take advantage of the second long holiday in December, the main thing is to identify which sector you work in. Those who work in the public sector will automatically access the rest, since December 26 was declared a non-working day for state entities, which is in addition to the holiday on the 25th and the usual weekend rest. On the other hand, in the private sector the situation varies, because this provision is not mandatory; Each company decides whether to adopt the non-working day and, if so, establishes how the hours stopped working will be compensated. If your workplace decides to comply with the measure, you will also have a long holiday, but if it does not, you must go to work normally.
In activities with special regimes, such as commerce, transportation, services, restaurants or health, the benefit will depend on the operation of each company and the internal agreements that exist. The same happens with those who have rotating shifts or atypical days, where the possibility of rest will depend on the organization of the workplace. And remember that, if you have to work on December 25, because it is a national holiday, you have the right to receive triple remuneration if you do not receive substitute rest.
What does the declaration of non-working days respond to?
Non-working days are usually declared for two main purposes: organize the tourist flow and boost the economy. For this reason, the Executive schedules these days as part of the Non-Working Days Calendar of the year to facilitate the scheduling of breaks, trips and public sector activities. In some cases, these days also help simplify internal operations of the State by concentrating procedures or reducing administrative burden prior to the closing of the fiscal year.
