The The Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) has as a priority to renew the contract of Argentine coach Ricardo Gareca to continue for the next four years at the head of the Peruvian team, which on Monday lost the playoff to the Qatar-2022 World Cup against Australia on penalties.
“The priority is that Ricardo stays. Everything else is secondary. Although it is true that there is a working group, We know perfectly well that everything goes hand in hand with the leadership that Ricardo has imposed in all these years,” said the FPF sports director, Juan Carlos Oblitas, at a press conference.
“I have a plan and that plan is Gareca, I don’t have a plan B. Now we have to focus on his continuity,” said the former World Cup player.
“Agustín (Agustín Lozano, president of the FPF) and I told him that we want him to continue leading the Peruvian team. I am convinced that he is the right person for the next four or five years,” he added.
Oblitas indicated that on Thursday he held a meeting with Gareca to discuss the situation left by the playoff match with Australia in Doha. In said meeting, the coach was asked to continue with a view to the qualifying process for the 2026 World Cup.
“I’m not going to give the details, but I left that meeting optimistic.. He is going to take a few days of reflection with his family, “added the leader.
Gareca qualified Peru for Russia-2018 after an absence of 36 years in World Cups, lor that made him the most beloved man in Peru.
In the recent South American qualifier, Peru was fifth and had to face a team from Asia, which made many Peruvians believe that the ticket to Qatar was insured in advance. The loss to Australia was a bucket of cold water.
ANDn seven years, Gareca managed 96 games for Peru: 40 wins, 21 draws and 35 losses. Under his leadership, the Peruvian team began to have a winning mentality.
