The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Elmer Schialerannounced this Tuesday that Peru recognizes Edmundo González Urrutia as elected president of Venezuela.
The statement came one day after the president Dina Boluarte will talk via videoconference with González and the leader of the Venezuelan opposition, Maria Corina Machado.
“What yesterday’s statement does is give an account of the contents of that conversation, of the conversation between the president of Peru and the president-elect Edmundo González,” he said on RPP.
When asked about the questions about the statement in which González Urrutia was not classified as president-elect, the chancellor assured that it was a recognition as winner of the presidential elections of July 28, 2024.
“Edmundo González Urrutia is president-elect, because that is indeed how we consider him. [¿Se lo dijeron ayer?] Of course, not once, but several times,” he said.
The head of the Foreign Ministry considered that “what has happened in Venezuela is very clear.” Along these lines, he indicated that “the defense of democracy and human rights by María Corina Machado and Edmundo González is obviously clear to everyone.” In addition, he pointed out that “the failure to comply with the Venezuelan electoral law itself by the Maduro regime at the time of the proclamation of the National Electoral Council is also evident.”
Schialer assured that the Peruvian government maintained communications with María Corina Machado and Edmundo González, who was invited to Peru by President Boluarte, but her agenda did not allow for the trip.
The HR Minister The US considered that on January 10, the day of the inauguration of the new Venezuelan government, “there must be a change” and pointed out that this is what democratic countries support. In that sense, he pointed out that if the dictator Nicolás Maduro does not hand over power this Friday, he will be considered an “autocrat” by Peru.
“From that day on he is no longer a legitimately elected president,” he warned.
He will travel to Panama with other foreign ministers
Elmer Schialer announced that he will travel to Panama to meet with other foreign ministers to “see what steps we are going to take as an international community.”
“Countries such as Ecuador, Costa Rica, Paraguay, the United States, Guatemala have confirmed… Then, the ambassadors of other countries are also invited,” he noted.
He hinted that Chile will also be present, but indicated that he has not yet received that confirmation.
The head of the Foreign Ministry assured that the Council of Ministers has evaluated the possible increase in the migratory flow of Venezuelan citizens in the face of the crisis that their country is experiencing. Given this, he considered that Peru has “an extremely porous northern border.”
However, he announced that the visa requirement for Venezuelan citizens will be maintained.
Currently, he said, this document is “impossible to obtain” because Venezuela broke diplomatic relations with Peru.
