Peru reaches agreements to export mandarins to Vietnam

He Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigationreported that as a result of a technical meeting between phytosanitary authorities of Peru and Vietnam, phytosanitary protocols were established for the export of tangerine frescue this important Asian market.

“It is important that Senasa, as a strategic arm of Midagri, continues to manage access to new markets, to increase commercial opportunities for Peruvian producers and continue growing in agro-exports,” said the head of Midagri, Ángel Manero.

PRODUCTION IN PERU

The production of mandarins in Peru has shown variations in recent years. According to data from the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), in 2020 525,000 tons were reached, with Lima as the main producing region, contributing 44% of the total, followed by Junín (24%), Ica (17%) and Puno ( 6%)

For the 2022-2023 campaign, the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service estimated a production of 550,000 metric tons, which represented a 4% decrease compared to the previous year. And in the 2023-2024 campaign, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) projected a recovery, with a 2% increase in production, reaching 560,000 tons.

THE BLUEBERRY MARKET

During this meeting, the Senasa technical delegation also presented the progress made in the efforts for access of blueberries to this country, which is in the pest risk analysis stage.

The Vietnamese delegation, according to Andina, stated that after having closed the requirements for mandarin, they will continue with blueberry, whose process will be faster.

The Peruvian delegation was made up of the director of Plant Health of Senasa, Orlando Dolores and the Ambassador of Peru in Vietnam, Patricia Ráez.

During the 2023 campaign, Peruvian citrus entered more than 40 countries, with the United States being the main market, representing 41% of the total exported. The citrus fruit with the greatest demand was the mandarin, with more than 190 thousand MT of exported volume, with the United States as its main markets.
