Peru on the air: Alist six tourist cables

He tourism It is not yet recovered from prepaymia levels. In 2024, Peru received just over 3.2 million visitors from abroad, although the figure was below the more than 4.3 million in 2019. According to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR), in the first semester, the entrance of tourists exceeded 1.6 million, that is, 75.3% of what was received in the same period six years ago.

This sector, which today has some problems for ticket sales to Machu Picchu (See page 14), it also has a potential to continue developing and thus exceed the US $ 4,431 million currencies generated last year.

To boost this item, mainly in the interior of the country, there are six projects of cables in the Proinversion portfolio for approximately US $ 460 million.

The most emblematic work of this list is the improvement of public tourism services of the Archaeological Park of Choquequirao, which includes the construction, financing, operation and maintenance of a cable and buse transport system. This initiative will be key to the Choquequirao archaeological monument (Mach) and will connect Cusco and Apurímac.

With this project, which will take place under the modality of public-private association (app), the travel time that lasts two days to only 20 minutes will be significantly reduced. So far there would be four consortiums interested in this initiative.

In this regard, Mario Hernández, Special Director of Proinversion Projects, detailed to this newspaper that they are currently in a stage of analysis of the financial part and indicated that it would be expected to award it in the first quarter of next year.

“The phones awaken expectations for all the flow of people who use this service. There has been a technical team in proinversion that in these months has been going to a series of regions looking for opportunities,” he explained, and recalled the impact that Kuélap has had, which was inaugurated in March 2017.

Cusco by the air

In addition to Choquequirao, in Cusco there are also three phones that suggest that tourism in the area expands beyond the Machu Picchu llaqta. One of them is that of Collpani Grande – Astronomical Observatory Viscachani, which will cover a 3.6 -kilometer journey.

The second is that of Querocancha, in the province of Urubamba, which will improve the connectivity and development of the region. In this case, two sections will be made: one that will connect Quespihuanca, an area that is five minutes from the Plaza de Armas, and the other that will take visitors to the archaeological site of Querocancha.

Finally, the Waqrapukara cable car is also on the agenda of this region, which aims to substantially improve accessibility to the archaeological site of Waqrapukara, in the province of Acomayo.

The Proinversion Representative explained that they are still analyzing whether the phones will be concessioned separately or in a package.

Other proposals

In the Proinversion list is also the Huascarán cable car in Áncash. This is a project that seeks to improve access from the Llanganuco Lagoon to the slopes of the snowy Huascarán.

Mario Hernández explained that this work will allow you to enjoy unique panoramic views of the snowy Huandoy, Pisco, Yanapaccha, Huascarán and Chopicalqui. In addition, it seeks to boost sustainability, boost the local economy and generate employment.

Puno will also have his cable car, Cerro Azoguini – Lago Titicaca. This project will facilitate access to views to the lake and the city, but also includes the development of complementary infrastructure with a cultural recreational space.

Less traffic

The phones in some countries are also used as public transport and in Peru the same could happen. To do this, Mario Hernández reported that they have signed an agreement with the National Transportation Authority (ATU) to develop urban transport and mass mobility projects.

As reported at the time the head of Proinversion, Luis del Carpio, would work on these proposals for the districts of El Agustino and San Juan de Lurigancho.
