A recent report from the National Police of Peru (PNP) shows a worrying increase in violent crimes during 2024, highlighting 2,126 homicides and 1,125 cases of hitmenwhich have generated a general feeling of insecurity in the country.
Alarming crime figures
The PNP reported a significant increase in serious crimes throughout 2024:
- Extortion: With 19,432 cases registeredthis crime mainly affects merchants, housewives, transporters and professionals. The most common modalities include drop by drop and the collection of quotas.
- Hitman: They were reported 1125 casesmostly related to settling scores, revenge and extortion. The victims include both Peruvian and Venezuelan citizens.
- Homicides: They were documented 2126 murdersof which the 84% were committed with firearms, and the 58% They occurred on public roads. The causes include hitmen, robbery resulting in death and feminicide.
Police response
The PNP carried out 18,548 police operationsachieving important results in the fight against crime:
- Dismantling of 122 criminal organizations.
- Arrest of 269,559 people in flagrante delicto.
- seizure of 7,155 weapons.
- Capture of 73,356 requirements and arrest of 16,642 foreigners involved in criminal activities.
Confidence crisis
The report also reflects a serious crisis in the perception of the institutions:
- 66% of citizens do not trust the National Police.
- Judges and prosecutors register disapprovals of the 87% and 86%respectively.
