Peru in protests: what is happening?

Peru reports more than 70 points with traffic interrupted by protests

The protests do not end in the regions or in Lima because the Parliament, in the plenary sessions in which it has debated the issue, does not decide on the advancement of the elections

In December of last year there was a social outbreak in Peru after the failed self-coup attempt by then President Pedro Castillo. Since then, the street protests have not stopped but rather have intensified and have already touched Lima, the capital of that country, in a much more violent way. To the long list of demands that citizens have now one more has been added: an end to police repression.

The Peruvian journalist Jacqueline Fowks, who has covered these demonstrations directly from Peru, explained what is happening in that nation, during her participation in the CocuyoClaroyRaspao of this February 9, which is a space hosted by Luz Mely Reyes and Xabier Coscojuela, journalists from firewood effect and SuchWhich, respectively.

«We have been protesting for two months because Dina Boluarte (who was vice president but took over from Castillo and is the current president of Peru), to take the presidency, made an alliance with the economic political sector that lost the elections in July of 2021 (…) This government has a course, which is not the one voted for by those who supported Castillo in 2021, which makes it demand an advance of the general elections, which Boluarte resigns and Congress is closed, which has 89% disapproval. Last year he had 76% disapproval,” Fowks said.

And as time goes by, the repression of the police forces against the demonstrators is causing more deaths and injuries. At the end of January there was already an official record of 69 deaths in this wave of anti-government protests. 47 of the victims were civiliansaccording to the reporter.

“The protests do not end in the regions or in Lima because Parliament, in the plenary sessions in which it has debated the issue, does not decide on the advancement of the elections. Boluarte does not resign, despite the fact that more than 75% would expect him to do so to give rise to elections. The demonstrations also continue because the number of deaths from shots by the Order Forces is 47,” the journalist said.

In this sense, he commented that The demands of the Peruvian population are no longer just political or for a change of government, but for an end to violence promoted by the public force. He said that the public is asking for justice because in some towns where there have been dozens of deaths, the tax investigations have not even begun.

The measure was already applied in Cuzco, Puno and Tacna, and in some provinces of Apurímac, Madre de Dios and Moquegua, but now it is being extended to a regional level and also includes Arequipa.
