Peru has megaprojects worth more than US$194 billion

To this end, the country has a portfolio of 1,652 megaprojects valued at US$194,396 million, revealed a report by the Institute of Economics and Business Development (Iedep) of the Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL).

All this represents 70% of the Gross Domestic Product (PBI) and are expected to be implemented within a period of approximately five years.

The list includes 70 mining projects worth US$55.5 billion, of which 31 are related to copper, eight to zinc, five to gold and five to silver. Most are located in Cajamarca and Apurímac, and include El Galeno and Hierro Apurímac.

There are also 430 transport infrastructure projects, including 334 highways, of which nine are operated by private companies via concessions and 180 are public works. The rest are divided between Works for Taxes and Public-Private Partnerships (PPP). Also included in this category are 31 bridges, 14 airports and 15 ports.

One of the largest investments is the interurban road transmission service in the new Central Highwayas well as Metro Line 3 and the Peripheral Ring Road.

The head of the Iedep of the CCL, Oscar Chavezstated that the implementation of these initiatives will contribute to economic growth and the creation of jobs.

“There are important investment projects that, once completed, will improve the country’s competitiveness and productivity,” he said.

CORRUPTION

However, the union representative pointed out that in order to carry out these projects, challenges such as bureaucracy, corruption and financing restrictions must be overcome.

According to the CCL, the cost of corruption in Peru amounted to S/72,000 million in the last three years.
