Peru classifies trans people as mentally ill

Through a supreme decree, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) of Peru once again classified trans people, who suffer from mental health problems due to their identities.

Within the framework of the commemoration of the 34th anniversary of the elimination of homosexuality from the list of the International Classification of Diseases, the government of Dina Boluarte took a step aside because through the Essential Health Insurance Plan (PEAS), a document that contains a detailed list of the conditions, interventions and care that are financed for all insured persons and that governs public and private health centers in Peru, where new diagnoses are incorporated into the category of mental and behavioral disorders.

The document explains that “transsexualism, dual-role transvestism, gender identity disorder in childhood, other gender identity disorders, fetishistic transvestism and egodystonic sexual orientation” have been called sexual problems. mental health, in Peru’s insurance coverage.
