Peru Cámaras expressed his deep concern regarding the recent revelations about unofficial meetings of President José Jerí with private actors.
The union, representing the regions of the country and its productive institutions, stated that Jerí’s links with these people and the context of the meetings have not yet been clarified; Likewise, he pointed out that the president’s explanations “so far are confusing and unconvincing.”
Through a statement they stated that the presidential administration is based on citizen trust. Therefore, they stated, when this is eroded, not only the leadership of the Executive is weakened, but also the institutional stability that the country needs to face its challenges.
“The strength of a country does not depend only on its economic performance, but on the solidity of its institutions and the trust that they inspire in citizens. When that trust is compromised, it is up to all actors in the democratic system to act with responsibility and adherence to the Constitution,” said Óscar Zapata, president of Perucámaras.
Responsibility and stability
According to Peru Cámaras, a few months before the general elections, it is imperative that the short remaining period of government be conducted with maximum responsibility, guaranteeing institutional continuity, the cleanliness of the electoral process and social peace.
In that sense, they maintained that it is up to the Congress of the Republic to calmly and firmly evaluate whether it is possible to restore confidence in the current president or if, on the contrary, it must make way for a constitutional transition that allows the legitimacy of the Executive to be recovered.
“What is at stake is not a political figure, but the credibility of the State,” they stated.
“The regions of Peru, represented by our Chambers of Commerce, reiterate their commitment to democracy, institutions and the ethical development of the country. We cannot be indifferent to events that compromise the image and direction of the Nation,” they concluded.
