Since this Sunday, Peru has been hosting the week of leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC). Ambassador Carlos Chávez-Tafur, Peru’s senior official in APEC, stated that our economy is betting that the summit will be able to reach major agreements by consensus, after several years of open disputes between the members of the group.
“In APEC all documents are approved by consensus, a consensus that a couple of years ago had been lost precisely as a result of these events (the trade dispute between the US and China and the Russian invasion of Ukraine), outside the agenda. characteristic of APEC,” Chávez-Tafur commented to the EFE agency.
In this regard, he highlighted that Peru, since it began its Presidency of the group, has “managed to recover consensus,” which has allowed a dozen documents to be signed “all by consensus.”
“We are very satisfied that consensus has been recovered in Peru,” he highlighted.
Leaders Week
The APEC leaders’ week began this Sunday with some first private meetings and will have its summit days with the arrival of 16 heads of State or Government, including the presidents of the US, Joe Biden, and China, Xi Jinping.
In this sense, Chávez-Tafur acknowledged that reaching agreements throughout the year “has not been without struggle,” since they have had to “reach compromises.”
“I am sure that this will happen, the same will happen on this occasion, both in the meeting of ministers of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, and in the meeting of leaders,” he said.
Between this Monday and Tuesday the meeting of senior officials will take place, while on Wednesday there will be a dialogue on indigenous peoples and on Thursday the ministerial meeting will take place, prior to the leaders’ meeting.
“They are already working on the writing sessions, they are already working on the texts (…) the idea is to reach this consensus,” he highlighted.
These consensuses revolve around the three fundamental milestones that are “empower, include and grow.”
“The motto is a product of work that was carried out before assuming the Presidency and during the first months of the Presidency, together with the other sectors that are involved in the APEC agenda. We believe that it is a powerful, solid motto” , commented the official.
As part of the debates, formulas will be addressed to combat informality, which especially affects Peru.
To achieve this, they will try tools such as technology “through regulation that allows all these people to be able to get into the economic circuit.”
Trump’s influence
The recent election of the Republican candidate, Donald Trump, as US president has also had its effect, since he has proposed creating 10% tariffs, which could be much higher for China.
In this regard, Chávez-Tafur recalled that the idea of APEC is to have a “new vision of a free trade area in the region.”
For this reason, he trusts that “these foundations that are intended to be laid now in this meeting are solid enough to maintain that tone” in the future.
