Peru aims to set a record in strawberry production

The production of strawberries In Peru it continues to grow. According to a technical study by the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), this year the country will produce more than 62,800 tons, which would mark a record.

In the first half of the year, 83.94% of the country’s populated geographic area had guaranteed 4G mobile coverage, Osiptel reported.

Only between January and September of this year, a growth of 51.3% was observed compared to the same period in 2024. For this reason, it is estimated that 2025 will mark a period of constant growth until reaching 82,400 tons in 2028, in an optimistic scenario.

For this scenario to materialize, it is necessary to encourage intensive modernization, to finance varietal renewal with high-yielding and firm cultivars for freezing, and to promote protected agriculture in high Andean regions such as Cusco, Áncash and Cajamarca.

Additionally, the report states that it is necessary to create a national strawberry export program with certifications and technical assistance. They also propose establishing collection centers and cold chambers in emerging poles.

On the other hand, Lima (Barranca, Huaral, Huaura, Huacho) is the most important region for production, and concentrates 90% of the national total. Other emerging areas such as La Libertad, Arequipa, Apurímac and Huánuco are seeking to expand their cultivation areas.

SHIPMENTS ABROAD

Midagri data also revealed that between January and September there is a recovery in fresh strawberry exports by 285% to a volume of 27 tons. Spain is the market to which more than 95% of these shipments are directed.

Regarding frozen fruit, a volume of 15,133 tons has been exported in the period analyzed, 77% above what was registered in the same period of 2024. Here, the main destination is the United States.

“Peru has consolidated its position as the eighth world exporter of frozen strawberries, which represents approximately 4% of global trade. In contrast, exports of fresh strawberries are marginal, with very low and decreasing volumes,” it reads.
