After 12 years have passed since the beginning of the investigations into the Perseus case, it came to an end yesterday with the delivery of the sentence. The Fourth National Criminal Appeals Chamber of the Superior Court, headed by Teófilo Salvador, ordered that only one member of the Movadef leadership, and that six other intermediate-ranking members, be sentenced for the crime of terrorism to sentences ranging from from 16 to 35 years old.
According to the sentence, the six members of the Movadef leadership—Elena Iparraguirre Revoredo, Florindo Flores Hala (‘Artemio’), Osmán Morote Barrionuevo, María Pantoja Sánchez, Margot Liendo Gil and Victoria Trujillo Agurto—were found guilty of the crime against public tranquility, under the form of terrorism.
However, although the Prosecutor’s Office requested a sentence of life imprisonment for those six ringleaders, the court ruled that Iparraguirre, Flores (‘Artemio’), Morote, Pantoja and Liendo could not be sentenced to life imprisonment for a second time. This is because they are currently serving the maximum sentence for the crime of terrorism.
While in the case of Victoria Trujillo, the court concluded that she be sentenced to 35 years in prison.
Six other intermediate-ranking members of the organization—Alfredo Crespo Bragayrac, Fernando Olórtegui Crispín, Atilio Cahuana Yuyali, Carlos Gamero Quispe, Olmer Apaca Vega and Zulma Peña Melgarejo—were sentenced to 16 years and three months in prison.
The sentence ordered that the Movadef leadership must pay civil reparation of S/1 million; while in the case of the other six intermediate-rank members, they will have to pay S/500 thousand. All of them will also be required to pay a 50-day fine, which represents approximately S/12,500.
Complete hearing of the Movadef sentence.
DISSOLUTION ORDERED
The referee also decided the dissolution of Movadef as well as the closure and closure of all its premises in the country.
This, to avoid – indicates the resolution – that he can request his registration again in the National Election Jury (JNE), as he did in 2011, and stop, in this way, the ideologization of the Communist Party of Peru – Shining Path , “because its constitution had illicit origin.”
The court also established that Movadef was created by order of Abimael Guzmán, and that the idea was conceived in 1992, and that it is part of the political structure of Sendero Luminoso.
At the hearing, it was recalled that ‘Artemio’ gave S/100 thousand for the creation of Movadef, and that this money would come from drug trafficking and illegal loggers.
“It’s part of the trail”
In interview with Peru21TVthe former head of the Dircote, Colonel Max Anhuamán, assured that it is “a historic sentence.”
“It is a measure worthy of praise for having taken this brave decision. At the time, at Dircote, we proved that this organization is part of Sendero Luminoso. “It is an appendix of that terrorist organization,” said the former police chief.
