Perry Bamonte, guitarist of The Cure, dies at 65

The Cure confirmed the death of Perry Bamonte, the band’s key guitarist in the nineties and in its recent return, at the age of 65.

Perry Bamonteguitarist who was part of The Cure during one of his most prolific stages and who returned to the band in recent years, died this Friday, December 26 after a brief illness. He was 65 years old, as reported by the British group through an official statement.

The news was confirmed from The Cure’s official website, where the band dedicated an emotional message to him. “Calm, intense, intuitive, constant and enormously creative, ‘Teddy’ was a warm and vital part of The Cure’s story,” they noted. In the text they highlighted that, after collaborating with the group in the late eighties, Bamonte became a regular member in 1990, participating as a guitarist, six-string bassist and keyboardist.

During his years as an official member, Perry Bamonte participated in seminal albums such as wish, Wild Mood Swings and Bloodflowersin addition to acoustic recordings and other works of the group. According to the statement, he offered more than 400 concerts over 14 years with the band.

“He rejoined The Cure in 2022, offering other 90 concertssome of the best in the band’s history, which culminated in London on November 1, 2024,” added the group, which also expressed its solidarity with the musician’s family. “We will miss him very much”, concludes the message.

Born in London in 1960 and raised in BasildonPerry Bamonte came to The Cure in 1984 as part of the work team, thanks to his brother Daryl Bamontewho served as the group’s tour manager. Initially he was personal assistant to Robert Smithleader and voice of the band, until with the passage of time he earned a place on stage after the departure of the keyboardist Roger O’Donnell.

In 2005Bamonte left the group after Smith reformed The Cure as a trio. Later, in 2012joined the project Love Amongst Ruin and collaborated again with The Cure when the band entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.

The return and world tour

In 2022Perry Bamonte officially returned to The Cure to be part of the tour Shows Of A Lost Worldwhich toured Europe, and in 2023 reached the United States and South America, reaffirming its importance within the group’s sound and history.

The tribute of the fans and their legacy

After hearing the news, numerous followers of The Cure expressed their regret on social networks. One of the most shared messages summed up the feelings of the fans: “Perry Bamonte is a giant healer, a great instrumentalistand his absence will not prevent everything he represented and continues to represent in the history of the band from shining.”

Although the band is not currently active, two weeks ago it premiered on 500 cinemas from 27 countries the concert film The Cure: The Show of a Lost Worlddirected by Nick Wickham. Recorded in the London Troxy in 2024, the production recreates the spirit of the world tour and features 31 songsmany of them great classics of the group.
