Modifications or substitutions of candidacies close on July 18 as established by law. 10 candidates aspire for the seat of Miraflores, among them the ruler Nicolás Maduro and the diplomat Edmundo González Urrutia, options where the vote is polarized according to the polls. Regarding the MUD card, there is a pending decision that could affect the option of the Unitary Platform.
The electoral schedule for the presidential elections is moving forward. This Thursday 18th, at midnight, the deadline for substitutions and modifications of candidacies that will not be reflected in the electoral ballot of July 28th expires.
The period of substitutions that are not reflected in the electoral ballot began on April 28. In the Organic Law of Electoral Processes (Lopre), in its Chapter Vit is established that any party may substitute or modify its nomination for an elected position up to 10 days before the election for the following reasons: death, resignation, physical or mental disability duly certified by the competent authority or constitutional and/or legal reasons.
In any case, any substitution or modification must comply with the same requirements established in the laws and regulations in order to be accepted.
There were 12 candidates running for these elections. Two of them withdrew early: Juan Carlos Alvarado for Copei and Luis Ratti for the Popular Democratic Right and their cards were attached to another option.
The final ballot will feature ruler Nicolás Maduro (PSUV), who is seeking a second re-election, diplomat Edmundo González Urrutia (MUD), evangelical pastor Javier Bertucci (El Cambio), former CNE rector Enrique Márquez (Centrados), university rector Luis Eduardo Martínez (AD judicialized), businessman Benjamín Rausseo (Conde), university professor Antonio Ecarri (Alianza del Lápiz), former mayors Claudio Fermín (Soluciones) and Daniel Ceballos (Arepa Digital), as well as former deputy José Brito (Primero Venezuela).
Under the current scenario, the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) has a pending decision on the card of the Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) that could directly affect the candidacy of González Urrutia, who was also supported by the cards of Un Nuevo Tiempo (UNT) and Movimiento por Venezuela (MPV). The request was filed in March by politician Luis Ratti for alleged “double militancy.”
Experts consulted by SuchWhich They pointed out that although the candidacies must be seen as independent, due to their nature established by law, these are political decisions that fall to the TSJ. That is, it will be up to the highest court, in the event of suspending the MUD party, to decide whether to maintain the figure of Edmundo González for the UNT and MPV cards or eliminate his option.

This was also hinted at by the CNE’s principal rector, Aime Nogal, a few days ago. “Probably the same decision of the Supreme Court of Justice will indicate whether the cards adhering to the primary nomination, which is that of the MUD, will remain in what condition. Either the petitioners themselves will request a clarification or those who are against it will be able to make use of the appeal, which in any case would be the Constitutional Court. We would have to wait to see what that decision is.”
Although rumors come and go on social media, the truth is that no candidate has expressed his intention to withdraw from the presidential elections. On July 15, Claudio Fermín responded to the comments and assured that will remain until the 28th of July.
“In this campaign I have been very insistent on changing the political model of confrontation for a political model of understanding, of agreement, and that is why I have committed myself to a government of broad scope first,” he said in an interview with Globovisión.
