In the midst of the commotion and uncertainty that our country is experiencing, there are groups with more and less experience in the public service that are looking for a space in the ROP, the Registry of Political Organizations of the JNE. More than one new one will seek to try their luck in the next general elections, whether they are early or not. Among them, Libertad Popular, a party with which Rafael Belaunde Llosa and his political associates will try to offer a platform on which to work for an effective solution to the constant crisis in our country. Libertad Popular does not speak of a candidate yet; in fact, it is in the last registration stage, just like Apra and who knows how many more games. Although Belaunde Llosa’s experience in public management is fleeting rather than brief -because he was part of the trustless cabinet of Pedro Cateriano, during the government of Martín Vizcarra, as Minister of Energy and Mines-, his ideas are practically cooking from the cradle, since he is the grandson of Fernando Belaunde Terry, with all that that implies.
THE FACE OF THE PARTY
It is said of the left and the right that they are atomized, that there are too many parties or proposals and, indeed, that is the case. However, this option, says Belaunde, although it is close to well-known politicians such as Pedro Cateriano and former minister Diana Álvarez Calderón, “it also has a team of people with experience in public administration and people linked to the world of small and medium-sized companies” , which is why you have not defined a candidate. The founder of Libertad Popular also explains –and nothing to do with Acción Popular, he clarifies– that politics in Peru is so volatile and unpredictable that they will see, as the days and weeks go by, if the presidential face would be someone from the party, whoever emerges from an alliance later, or even with the support of another character who appears on the national political scene.
THE WAYS OUT OF THE CRISIS
To begin with, says Rafael Belaunde, freedom is the fundamental axis for the economic prosperity of people and for personal development, which is why, he says, he defines himself more as liberal than as conservative, although in monetary policy, he explains, it would be more conservative. “It is very difficult to have an absolutist position in Peru, due to the enormous socioeconomic and geographical challenge, but I do believe that the basis of everything is private activity. If economic activity is not promoted, the State will not obtain resources to meet the needs, ”he assures. Thus, he considers that the way in which the State mobilizes all the resources it has in favor of the population must be corrected and also, among other things, invest 80% of informality. “It is very expensive to be formal in Peru, it is true for everyone, but more so for micro-enterprises due to the legal design that condemns these people to informality. In fact, the same thing happens in artisanal mining and everything starts to solve the investment and thus achieve economic reactivation, without forgetting that the pacification of the south is essential ”, he explains.
FAMILY POLITICIAN
“My childhood memories are linked to the political figure of my grandfather, who became president for the second time when I was 6 years old,” says the grandson of Fernando Belaunde, who lived the first months of his life in Orcopampa, Arequipa, where his dad worked. Although he grew up in Lima and Washington with his brothers, after school, due to the separation of his parents, he moved with his grandfather, precisely the former president, and his wife, Violeta Correa. There, he explains, he was able to absorb valuable learning: “I was able to understand his love for Peru, that in the country’s cultural, ethnic and geographical diversity lies his greatest possibility and strength. Also, that in tenacity, perseverance and honesty is the path to progress”. Although up to now he has not approached politics, Rafael Belaunde, 48 years old, says that he sought to accumulate capital in private activity to do exactly what he proposes today: “There is a degradation in terms of the professional and ethical quality of the politicians, and I think you have to participate. I have always had concern for the country and I believe that everyone who can contribute in some way has to do so and that is what we are at ”, he concludes.
