On May 5, the Single Port Union and Related Branches (SUPRA) announced that it will deepen the measures of struggle with sectoral strikes starting this Monday, May 9, and they are evaluating the realization of a 72-hour strike in all the ports of the country, in response to layoffs and pay cuts.

As a result, the white senator Sebastián Da Silva said that if he were Minister of Labor “he would soon have a decree of essentiality to avoid a prolonged strike at the port.”

“This country cannot withstand a 72-hour strike, less so in the midst of the largest harvest in history, this would cause logistical chaos,” explained the white legislator.

a damn

Da Silva’s statements did not sit well with Pereira, who defended the port workers’ measure of struggle.

“If they strike, it is because they are losing jobs, because of an absurd decision by the government to grant the concession to Katoen Natie for a period of 50 years. Do you want the port union to do nothing?”, raised the president of the FA.

He added that a service can be declared essential when life, health or safety is endangered, but it cannot be done when there is economic damage, because when there is a strike there is always economic damage.

“A worker, when he loses his job, loses everything. And Sebastián Da Silva doesn’t give a damn about those 150 laid-off workers. The port worries about many things, because until now no one has been able to explain how it was granted for 50 years and without an economic and financial report, how the ANP did not deal with the issue, or how the reports of the Court of Accounts are changed. Justice will laud at some point, but clearly there are wrong decisions and in this context people are left without work. Do you expect them to do nothing? Sebastián Da Silva does not need to defend his work, “said Pereira.
