The president of the Broad Front, Fernando Pereira, criticized the president of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, for making use of the national radio and television network to militate in favor of the “No” in the referendum against the 135 articles of the Law of Urgent Consideration (LUC) of next March 27.
For Pereira, Lacalle’s decision to stand firm on his idea of making the chain seems “self-critical”, because it was he himself who rejected access to the instrument to the PIT-CNT and the Commission for the Yes, who requested it in May 2020 and June 2021, respectively.
“The fact that he is using an old, useless instrument, as was raised on May 1 by his government, seems to be a self-critical reflection on an instrument that is still very useful. The government has -and had- the obligation to inform people about the law, and decided to say that it was popular and fair without anyone knowing it, and that it defended itself. Today we see all the ministers touring the country because the law is not upheld,” said Pereira.
For the Frente Amplio leader, Lacalle Pou “is at the limit when using the chain.”
The FA will not ask for the chain
On behalf of the Broad Front, Pereira rejected that the party is going to request or make use of the chain to ask to campaign in favor of the “Yes”.
In the campaign, he explained, the FA is just one part of a large group of political and social organizations that seek the repeal of the 135 articles. “We believe in collectives. We are a part of the commission for the referendum, simply a part. That is made up of the union movement, the cooperative movement, feminisms, human rights organizations, neighborhood organizations and, also, the Broad Front and other sectors, ”she argued.
