This Monday, August 1, the Political Table of the Broad Front met to define the work agenda for the analysis of the government’s bill for social security reform, which is made up of 307 articles.

In this sense, the FA will form two groups made up of experts in social security who will prepare a technical and political document that will be evaluated by the Political Table of the Broad Front and will be input for the parliamentary debate.

Pereira said that the FA will request interviews with the PIT-CNT, the National Organization of Retirees and Pensioners of Uruguay (ONAJPU) and business organizations, to find out their opinions on the initiative.

Fall in salaries and pensions

He questioned that an average worker contributes 38 years of work to social security, while a military man retires at 38 years of age, with the same possibility of years of life. “These inequities must be studied, because there are savings banks that are in a deficit situation,” Pereira remarked.

He said that “pensions in the FA governments have risen 60% and so far in the current term of President Lacalle Pou they have fallen by nearly 4%. While wages, during the leftist governments grew above 58% and in this period fell about 5%. A worker today earns 18 wages less than what he earned in 2019”.

Loss of pensions and pensions

For his part, the former Minister of Labor and Social Security, Ernesto Murro, questioned the fact that in these two years there has been a great loss for some 800,000 people in all retirement and pension funds, due to the strict application of the salary reduction to the reduction of passivities.

“While prices in 2020 increased by an average of 9.4% and almost 8% in 2021, liabilities increased by 7.6% in 2021 and 6.16% in 2022,” he questioned.

Murro said that, “of the 800 thousand people, about 140 thousand who receive lower pensions and pensions, the adjustment that they begin to receive from today, corresponding to July 2022, amount went back two years.”

“The government saves hundreds of millions of dollars. Much of what the government describes as improving the fiscal deficit and saving public spending is done at the expense of 800,000 people who receive pensions and the 140,000 who receive the lowest pensions and pensions,” questioned Murro.
