Within the framework of a virtual meeting marked by various advice, recommendations and good wishes, the former president of Uruguay, Pepe Mujica, advised the President-elect, Gabriel Boric, almost a month after his appointment as President of the Republic.
Gathered thanks to Uruguay’s M24 radio, they discussed various matters, where they mainly discussed what it means to govern.
In the instance, Gabriel Boric acknowledged the personal appreciation he has for Mujica. “Pepe is a benchmark for us, I think his advice was well listened to: ‘advance step by step, but slowly so as never to be unseated’, is an issue that we have permanently present as a standard of conduct in our political performance and throughout our history” , he pointed.
Before the words, Mujica wished him luck and assured him that he trusts him. “I have confidence in your ability, you have a fresh wind, to have a more open vision of the progressive world,” he said.
Along the same lines, the former president of Uruguay congratulated the President-elect and highlighted his qualities. “You have young veins, because you have many misunderstandings ahead of you, because when you ask the powerful for collaboration, the selfishness that we humans carry inside jumps out,” he said.
On the other hand, Mujica reminded Gabriel Boric. “Remember the following, you have to leave seed. No matter how portentous the stage of your life is, the struggle is longer than our human life, and, therefore, it is collective and you have to worry that the task, that the desire of every day, don’t eat up the future. Governments eat up parties, governments tend to get bogged down bureaucratically, and the parties remain,” he stressed. “You have to govern, but not kill what will remain after you and after your generation, which are others and others,” he added.
For his part, the President-elect, Gabriel Boric, responded to his statements, where he assured that the “seed” of the former president of Uruguay is part of it. “In some way we are part of your seed, what am I going to say after this. It’s up to us to listen and learn, I thank you for not making the mistakes that you had because many times the burden of previous generations comes with the transfer of fear”, manifested.
The President-elect assured Mujica that “I take your advice very seriously, they are part of what lies ahead and we will be able to talk about the mistakes you made at the time.” Before a possible meeting, Gabriel Boric stated that “I hope to be able to go there, escape to your ranch and share a mate.”
In the last minutes of the virtual meeting, Mujica gave him one last piece of advice. “Take care of your heart, take care of your morale, take care of your presence, because when you are apparently at the top, more than ever, more than ever, you must not forget those who are very low down. And those who fight for equality, to mitigate inequalities , they have to express them in all the gestures of life”, he emphasized.
“I give you a hug and I will be with you,” concluded the former Uruguayan president to the President-elect.
