Parallel to the Summit of the Americas, from June 8 to 10, in Los Angeles, the People’s Summit for Democracy in solidarity with Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba, countries that were excluded from the appointment by the United States Government.
US activist Manolo de los Santos, founder and co-director of The People’s Forum project, indicated that during the event they will denounce “all the sanctions and illegal blockades” that the US government imposes against countries like Cuba and Venezuela.
“We argue that countries have the right to determine their own economic, political and social systems and the US government has no moral or political authority to impose its model of democracy on other countries,” he said.
De los Santos denounced that the Joe Biden administration called “a summit of his friends, among them certain countries that assume a neocolonial policy of servitude towards the United States and their business friends who profit from the unrest of the peoples.”
He regretted that the US has lost “the opportunity to set up a tremendous dialogue between the countries of the region.”
He explained that for three days more than 200 popular organizations and unions from the city will meet a kilometer and a half from the official summit and will hold workshops, plenary sessions and cultural activities.
“The Summit will raise all those important issues for our people: the rights of migrants, women and workers, the reconstruction and protection of democratic norms, the safety of families.
We will present a different vision of the hemisphere as a place of peace, freedom, and prosperity for all that excludes no country,” said Angelica Salas, director of the Californians for Human Rights Action Fund.
On the 10th they plan to close with a mobilization despite the fact that the Los Angeles police denied permission.
