The Peoples’ Summit ended this Sunday (16) at the Federal University of Pará, in Belém (PA), opposing “false solutions” for the climate and with an appeal to world authorities for a transition in global production modes that guarantees justice, sovereignty and popular participation.
Since November 12th, the meeting has brought together around 20,000 participants in a program parallel to the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30).
In addition to the panels, round tables and collective activities, the summit began with a boat launch in Guajará Bay, with the participation of 5 thousand people in 250 boats. The meeting was also marked by a march that brought together other movements and reached a participation of 70 thousand peoplesay the organizers.
“People saw in this popular mobilization the possibility of shouting louder, of shouting collectively at the process that is taking place in the official space of COP30, from where we cannot wait for solutions that are taking too long,” says Darcy Frigo, member of the Climate Summit Political Committee.
“We shout here that the people have the solution. And the people say: ‘we are the solution’”.
A declaration created over two years by people from all over the world and signed by 1,109 social organizations and political movements was read this Sunday and delivered to the president of COP30, ambassador André Corrêa do Lago.
False solutions
In content, the document repudiates the global production model and all processes that follow its capitalist logic, such as the energy transition, the solutions presented in the formal negotiations of the COPs and even the multilateralism process adopted.
“Capitalist production is the main cause of this climate crisis. And because we are within this system, we are bombarded with supposed climate solutions, which, in fact, are false solutions”, says Thauane Nascimento, who is also a member of the Political Committee of the Climate Summit.
“So, we are totally against, against, any false solution that is put forward as an alternative to combating the climate crisis. These solutions will not fulfill their purpose.”
According to the organizers of the summit, the use of a logic in which capital prevails causes large companies to occupy the spaces for decision-making and structuring public policies, in order to propose these “false solutions” as alternatives to the climate crisis.
“We understand that this organization of the people is the way, it is the model for solving this crisis. Another thing that we also want to affirm is that this privatization, commercialization, financialization of common goods, of public services, are completely contrary to the interests of the people. This is not just here in Belém do Pará, this is not just in Brazil, it is throughout the world”, reinforces Thauane.
Correa do Lago committed to taking the declaration to the COP30 negotiation spaces, in the next high-level session starting this Monday (17). “I am very happy to be able to preside over this COP with the support I feel from you. I hope that COP30 will be the turning point COP”, reinforced the ambassador.
