In his speech at the Plaza de Armas, in the center of Bogota, during the day that he called to support the projects of his government, President Gustavo Petro revealed details of what would be his pension reform.

The first thing the president commented was that the current pension law says that “only those who earn more than 4 minimum wages, permanently during their working time, may have a pension (…) The norm tells the Colombian people that, when they get old, they will not have a pension“.
Thus, he assured that what his pension reform will seek is that the right to a pension is a reality.

As Petro explained, his pension proposal wants to modify Law 100 and strengthen Colpensiones with contributions: “That the pension be a daily reality for those who come of age, that it be a right“.
He added that the reform will revolve around the so-called pillar system, which, in his words, would liberate the Colombian state,”that has assumed the payment of the pensioners of the private sector“.

“If we change the current system and part of the contribution goes to Colpensiones, it will be possible to release part of what the State pays to private sector pensioners, because the contributors will pay that part: each peso that enters, another peso will go out for the current old They don’t have a pension. He explained that its reform does not seek for the contributor to pay the elderly who do not have a pension, “because that is paid by the state“, but rather that the contributor pay what he could pay, “which are the private pensioners of Colpensiones.”
