Penal Forum registers 887 political prisoners until #1Dec: of 60 their whereabouts are unknown

The Penal Forum organization highlighted that 713 political prisoners are civilians, four of them teenagers, and 174 are soldiers. Regarding nationalities, 85 are foreigners or with dual nationality

The Venezuelan Penal Forum published its most recent report on political prisoners in the country, where 887 people were detained for political reasons, most of them men.

The organization stood out that 713 are civilians, four of them teenagers, and 174 are soldiers. Regarding nationalities, 85 are foreigners or have dual nationality.

Likewise, of 60 people their whereabouts are unknown, that is, their relatives or lawyers have not been able to have personal or telephone contact with them or they are not clear about their detention center.

In recent days, the organization made visible the case of lawyer Kennedy Tejada, who is part of the Penal Forum and was arbitrarily detained on August 2, 2024 while legally assisting a group of people in a National Guard command in the state of Carabobo.

Tejada remains detained in the Aragua Judicial Confinement Center, better known as the Tocorón prison, for alleged crimes of terrorism and hate speech. The Penal Forum has said that this is a “clear attempt to criminalize his work as a human rights defender.”

The NGO highlighted that from 2014 to date they have registered 18,591 arbitrary detentions and more than nine thousand are still arbitrarily subject to measures restricting their freedom.

The Penal Forum list was sent to the Organization of American States and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights “for verification and certification.”
