The senator and leader of Ciudadanos, Adrián Peña, met with the president Luis Lacalle Pou and handed him a document A series of measures that your sector proposes for combat the crisis at the borderwhere the shops are especially affected by the exchange difference with Argentina.
The first of the proposed measures involves increasing border controls, since “the difference in prices in certain products and services, generates a permanent flow of people residing in Uruguay who cross the border daily to acquire them in Argentine territory“.
“In practice, there is no perception of risk on the part of those who cross to make these purchases, nor are merchandise seized significantly,” the Ciudadanos text states.
In this way, it proposes assigning and training more customs officials; create special areas to control vehicles randomly; as well as incorporating “more technology for control”.
It is also proposed to improve the levels of surveillance, control and repression of crimes and customs infractions; regulate taxation for excess commercial traffic; create a registry of offenders; combat smuggling (strengthening measures to combat organized crime); and implement a front labeling of products to identify those that complied with the “formal processes”.
